Illustrated summary of joint Canadian/United States research operation, Project Tirec, carried out to assess feasibility of ice reconnaissance from photography obtained by space satellite and transmitted by electronics back to earth; coordination of launching and operation of Tiros IV meteorological satellite are described; methods used to gather comparative meteorological data by conventional air photography and visual observations, to formulate recognition characteristics of ice and cloud in satellite photos; results of preliminary analysis.
