Propulsion requirements for maintaining attitude and location of satellite with 2-yr operational life in synchronous equatorial orbit are examined; in case of 1000-lb satellite, with prescribed angular limits in attitude and longitude, required total impulse is estimated to be 2500 lb/sec; electrical propulsion with ion engines appears to provide system with minimum oa weight (60 lb) capable of accomplishing task; on basis of simplicity and reliability, however, it is found that l-p vapor jet system employing volatile liquid or subliming solid is most likely to deliver desired performance.
