To examine problems of structural integrity and solid propellant mechanics inherent in case-bonded solid propellant rocket motor, model test vehicle was developed by Thiokol Chemical Corp which is cylindrically perforated right circular cylinder; diameters of perforations were varied from 0.200 to 1.000 in., permitting variety of strains; failure was observed at temperatures ranging from -85 to +50 F; experimental data show that failure cannot be predicted from simple tensile tests in 1-min-1 strain rate range, presumably due to rate effects.
