Studies made of compression ignition of 60/40 mixture of ethyl and normal propyl nitrate, where compression piston was hydraulically driven, enabling control of compression ratio and piston travel and velocity; phenomena occurring were followed by means of high speed photography and measurement of pressure vs time; compressions at 3 piston velocities were investigated at various chamber attitudes; contrary to expectations, increases in piston velocity did not always lead to lower compression ratios for ignition; ignition was observed at lowest compression ratio for vertical downward compressions at slowest piston velocity.
