Optimum number of stages on gross mass basis for multistage rockets using single type of propulsion is derived for several assumptions concerning structural parameters; analytical approximations and more accurate numerical solutions are presented for optimum number of stages and optimized vehicle performance; results show that for optimized staging individual stage mass ratios depend only on structure factors, and are independent of exhaust velocity and mission requirement.
