Case for new Ry Eng group of Instn Mech Engrs, and activity it must engage in, in relation to possible future of railway industry and its relationship with other forms of transport; there are several advantages over road which are not yet exploited to full; prosperous future is assured for freight working provided expense and delay of transhipment of goods can be avoided; for passenger working, within range of 1500 mi, possibilities of competition with air exist; railway is still only feasible solution for urban and suburban transport; design of rolling stock, maintenance of way, etc, are considered.
