Yard of North Eastern Region, British Railways, is at Lamesley; site covers 135 acres along East Coast main line; there are 14 reception sidings; trains from them are propelled over hump by standard 400-hp 0-6-0 diesel electric shunting locomotives, uncoupled cuts of cars running into 48 main sorting sidings; group of 21 secondary sorting sidings is reached over further hump with local retarder control; building contains main hump control room and relay interlocking signaling installation controlling 13 mi of adjacent running line, yard arrivals and departures.
