Various schemes for mechanical conveyance of passengers from platforms to street level in London railroad station and reasons for their abandonment are discussed; final solution by means of device similar to escalator, except that it has no step formation and can move horizontally or on incline, or undulate as required, is described; civil engineering problems encountered in construction of Trav-o-lator machine chamber and tunnel, booking hall and reconstruction of station platforms; design of Trav-o-lators, their assembly on site and results obtained.
