Flettner rudder consists of main balanced rudder, free to rotate completely like weather-cock to after-edge of which is attached small secondary rudder whose function is to control angular position of main rudder, secondary rudder being controlled by helmsman; thus, small rudder steers large rudder and large rudder steers ship; inventor's principle of using current itself to operate rudder was first carried out on large German airplane during war; mechanical means employed in governing rudder; advantages of Flettner over ordinary rudder.
