Two complementary approaches are being followed at NASA Lewis Research Center; attempt is made to devise simplified conceptual models of combustion system that give quantitative predictions of system behavior from conservation equations; predictions must be checked experimentally; individual rate processes are studied to attain more realistic models; example of each approach to learning is given.
