Review of research on formation of detonation waves in combustible gaseous mixtures and progress made; further research includes role of turbulence in transition phase, relationship between combustion instability and formation of detonation waves, etc; studies of detonation waves and formation process will aid in utilization of detonative combustion in supersonic streams (ramjets, etc) and in rocket engines; if rocket engine can be designed using detonative combustion, engine weight and size can be reduced considerably because heat from chemical reaction will be released in very small volume compared to that in conventional rockets.
