Technique for measuring response of burning and propellant surface and arrangement used consisting of centrally vented cavity with propellant at one end and phase-locked mechanical driver, which excites cavity in resonant mode, at other end; bandwidth of resonance is determined by phase modulation of mechanical driver and measurement of resultant side-band amplitudes; experiments are described in which lock-on to resonance was achieved and maintained for runs of several seconds duration.
