Effect of 2 major types of power converters on weight and reliability of battery powered microwave amplifier systems is investigated; "variable current ratio" type converter is compared with more standard "constant current ratio" converter; effects introduced by wide range of voltages required by traveling wave tube are considered; evidence indicates that system involving traveling wave tube and power conversion system which does not dissipate " excess" battery power, will have highest power to weight ratio.
