Brigham and Cowan drydock was built by new method in which barrel of dock is formed of series of buttresses to save mass concrete; precast reinforced concrete cantilever buttresses, each weighing 10 tons, were erected against clay faces; panels of dock floor concrete cast round feet of buttresses formed base for wall; length 715 ft, width at entrance 95 ft; accommodation is provided for ships of up to 38,000 tons dw.
