Relation between freeboard and ship dimensioning discussed by Nilsson: of special importance is treatment of so-called tonnage openings; Erbach states that arrangement of cargo space in open superstructures is in many respects disadvantageous, and in no case useful; he recommends design in which all cargo space is below freeboard line.
