Large-capacity units are required when hauls are long, adverse grade conditions exist, or output of mine is large; coal cutters, coal loaders and larger-capacity coal cars increase production; heavy rails, good bonding, and good trolley-wire required; tables of recommended rail weight, hauling capacity of mine locomotive, and rated drawbar pull and speed; 2-motor locomotives are suitable for curves as low as 50 ft. radius and 3-motor locomotives for curves of 90 ft. radius.
