Current methods, which refer to equivalent steel scantlings, while acceptable for smaller ships, do not fully use properties of material when applied for large passenger ships; empirical method is presented, based on analysis of known satisfactory standards for steel deckhouses, showing how material may be distributed between plate and sections to give structure of minimum weight with high standard of strength.
