Ability of sailing yacht to bear to windward depends on its velocity relative to air and to water and upon aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces developed; relationships between velocities, their directions and some forces are expressed in analytical form; method of estimating optimum speed to windward from aerodynamic and hydrodynamic characteristics of vessel is illustrated by figures taken from wind tunnel tests on model sail and tank tests on hull.
