Hydrostatic transmission that powers new aircraft tow tractor built by Gar Wood Industries, Wayne, Mich, has variable displacement pump driving four variable displacement fluid motors; motors are built into wheels of vehicle and can drive it at up to 20 mph and pull 150-ton loads; each motor is built into hub of wheel it drives and works through planetary gearing arrangement; built for U S Marine Corps, tractor weighs 6000 lb without ballast, light enough to be transported by helicopter.
