Abstract Methanogens are strictly anaerobic bacteria, that obligately depend on other anaerobic bacteria for substrate supply in most ecosystems, except for solfataric habitats, that contain abiotically produced H2, CO2 and H2S. The dependence of methanogens on fermentative and acetogenic bacteria for substrates and of acetogenic bacteria on methanogens to maintain a low hydrogen partial pressure by interspecies H2-transfer, is discussed with respect to the fermentation of biopolymers, including carbohydrates, protein and lipids, monomers, fatty acids and aromatic chemicals. The degradation of phenol and derivatives is elaborated in more detail.
