Abstract Low frequency (0.1–8.0 Hz) magnetic wave spectra obtained from high resolution magnetometer data from the AMPTE barium release of 27 December 1984 are presented. The magnetic field shows an increase in wave activity at UKS almost immediately after the release. The most intense power levels at both spacecraft coincide with the greatest plasma disturbance. At frequencies above 0.2 Hz coherence between spacecraft and components is weak during the release despite the high power. In the latter part of the release the spacecraft detect irregular but coherent pulses of about 12 s period. The power at higher frequencies also pulses on the same scale. We conclude the pulsations are pulsations of the cloud as a whole.
