Abstract The large scale structure in the energetic electron and proton distributions associated with the Earth's magnetopause and bow shock were identified in the Prognoz 3,7 and 9 experiments in 1973–1984. These energetic particle patterns were studied in /1–3/ using quantitative magnetospheric models. Besides that the medium energy proton spectra were obtained in practice for the first time in the outer magnetosphere and outside the magnetosphere at high latitudes and at great distances (up to ∼100 RE) from the Earth. This report discusses the space-time variations of the energetic particle fluxes and of the magnetic field in the high-latitude tail with varing the interplanetary medium parameters. Special attention is paid to the rearrangement of the magnetosphere during the 22 Mar 1979 magnetic storm observed on several satellites in different regions.
