AbstractThe provision of data is essential if scientists are to provide the advice needed to address the environmental problems that are now facing mankind. These data are needed for two reasons:- - to identify and advance understanding of relevant processes- to monitor the state of the earth-atmosphere system. The former is tied to the development of models and the latter to the detection of changes (plus the validation of models). These data cannot be provided without recourse to observations from space; neither can it be provided by one nation working alone. International cooperation is essential. This paper outlines the planned contribution of the European Space Agency covering not only the polar platform era but also the period that will preceed it. Here special mention will be made of ERS-1 which is due for launch early in 1991 and which will have the capability to make a major contribution to our understanding of the environment. The paper also outlines some of the instruments currently being studied by the Agency which are intended to address environmental problems.
