Abstract The principles of airborne and satellite borne recovery of the gravity field are outlined where the fundamental ideas of global gravity field determination based on spherical harmonics expansion and differential (satellite) orbit improvement is only briefly discussed whereas emphasis is given to gradiometric airborne and satellite approaches. Also altimetric satellite determinations of geopotential and related gravity field parameters are pointed out. Concepts of satellite-to-satellite-(SST)-techniques are concisely treated in view of the role the method was playing in the past even though it might not be implemented before 1996. Results, accuracies and future prospects for airborne and satellite borne gradiometry are considered in detail.
