Abstract One striking feature in the ion compositions of the solar corona and the energetic particle population of the solar flares is that the abundances of ions with first ionization potentials (FIP) small then 10 eV are enhanced relative to the solar system abundances. A scenario is developed here to illustrate how the combined effect of ionization by the intense Lyman-alpha radiation in the solar disk together with plasma transport associated with ion-neutral friction might contribute to such FIP effect.
