Abstract In the paper, a computer program is developed to simulate the flow of passengers and airport service equipment within a terminal area. Given variable arrival and departure schedules, composition of aircraft and passenger traffic, number of service equipment needed for each incoming and outgoing flight, etc., the model can be applied to evaluate, in terms of total or specific operational distances, the quality of different terminal designs as well as their sensitivity to changes in operating policies, including ramp-use patterns. As an example, four standard types of airport terminals were investigated. In connection with ramp-use strategies, a method was developed to minimize passenger walking distances on the basis of arriving and departing flight data. This method, employing variable gate-assignment, resulted in considerable reductions of passenger distances as compared with present ramp usage. It is proposed to test this method in a real-world situation.
