Abstract Future space VLBI missions will explore new dimensions in angular resolution, sensitivity, frequency range and image quality. The International VLBI Satellite (IVS), currently under assessment by ESA and the Soviet Academy of Sciences, proposes to make significant advances in all these parameters compared with the first generation missions RADIOASTRON and VSOP.
