Abstract This note demonstrates that it is possible to obtain a maximum likelihood estimation of the ø parameter in Dial's assignment method without repeated application of the assignment algorithm implicit in the procedure introduced recently by Robillard (1974). While the two methods produce comparable results, that outlined here greatly reduces sample requirements, and seems to reduce computation time, based on comparison with Robillard's example.
