Abstract A review is presented of theoretical ideas on the general circulations in the atmospheres of Earth, Mars and Venus and also of results of their theoretical modelling. The role of various factors is discussed in the formation of the circulations. These results are compared with observational data obtained by different means. Data of direct local measurements of meteorological parameters in the atmospheres of Venus and Mars are discussed including those obtained at their surfaces.
