Abstract An analysis is made of the information on cosmic ray origin to be gleaned from studies of cosmic γ-rays. It seems very likely that supernova remnants provide some of the cosmic ray energy input and recent studies of spectral variations give support to the idea. However, these same spectral variations have led us to reasses the role of Inverse Compton interactions; we conclude that such interactions may be much more significant than previously assumed. If this is the case then much more work will need to be done before the origin problem can be regarded as solved.
