Abstract This study presents an economic evaluation of current proposals for changes in U.S. motor vehicle size and weight standards. Commercial vehicle operators, envisioning pronounced economies of scale in equipment size and weight, have supported recent legislative proposals to raise these standars. Other parties, notably representatives of automobile operators, state highway departments, Federal agencies and competing transport modes, have opposed liberalization. Analysis of potential benefits and costs of greater sizes and weights concludes that, due to a great excess of public and social costs over carrier benefits, any general increase would be a grave mistake in public economic policy.
