Abstract We analysed the temporal behaviour of 5 gamma-ray bursts, selected among the longest and the most intense ones in the Masets' catalogue, recorded by KONUS experiment on board of the Soviet probes Venera 11 and Venera 12. We found evidence of red noise which can be interpreted by means of a shot noise model, with characteristic shot time of the order of 1 s. This pattern however is not found in the power spectrum density of other events of analogous length and intensity. For example in the 1979 December 30 event similar aperiodic structures are not present, while the 1979 March 5 principally shows a periodicity of 8 s. These results pose the question whether these different temporal behaviours in the gamma-ray bursts indicate different classes of events or rather different aspects of a single phenomenon.
