Abstract Based on measurements of the Nimbus-7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) the emission behaviour of various study areas in Central and Eastern Europe was investigated under snow-covered and snow-free conditions. The modification of the surface emission through atmospheric effects was studied based on radiative transfer calculations with the Millimeter Wave Propagation Model of Liebe /1/. An algorithm was developed which allows the determination of the atmospheric contributions using simple input parameters. Additional investigations on the effects of rainfall events on microwave emission signatures were carried out for regions in the Sahel zone.
