Abstract The effects of the penetration of the convection electric field into the region of the main ionospheric trough are investigated on the basis of simultaneous measurements of the quasistationary electric field and the plasma density at the height of approximately 900 km aboard the Intercosmos - Bulgaria 1300 satellite. Different MLT intervals and different geomagnetic activities are studied. The measurements are made in the night sector under moderate geomagnetic activity. The amplitude of the electric field in the trough region is about 10 – 20 mV/m, and an abrupt change of the direction of the electric field vector is observed in the trough region.
