Abstract Precision radar tracking data on three spherical satellites have been used to evaluate atmospheric density models: Jacchia 1971 /1/, Jacchia 1977 /2/, Barlier et al 1977 /3/, Hedin 1983/4/, and Hedin 1987 /5/. The satellites have perigee heights (q) of 270 km, 780 km, and 1500 km. The Precipitation Index (PI) quantifies the intensity and spatial extent of high-latitude particle precipitation from observations made by the NOAA/TIROS weather satellites. None of these models now use this index, whereas we have previously shown as much as 0.50 correlation of the density model error and the PI. We will report on extension of our previous work in three ways: 1) The data set has been extended to more than one year; 2) A satellite at 1500 km altitude has been added, and is important since it provides information about the atmosphere at altitudes where little or no data is input into the models; and 3) The recent CIRA87 Model and a thermosphere wind model are evaluated.
