Abstract Space plasma current sheets, like those in the plasmasheet of the Earth's magnetotail or in the magnetopause, create strongly curved magnetic fields. The adiabaticity of charged particles motion in them may be destroyed and deterministic chaos may appear. In this paper we investigate the influence of a magnetic shear, caused by a finite guide field component, on the chaotic particle motion. We derive the adiabaticity parameter in such fields and describe the routes to chaos.
