Abstract Satellite measurements of solar X-ray and H-Lyman-alpha radiation are used to establish the role of X-rays and Lyman-alpha in the absorption of radio waves at 1539 kHz (A3 method, Central Europe) under quiet and disturbed (flare) conditions by two different methods. The NO concentration is estimated by comparing these experimental results with model calculations. These estimates provide afternoon NO concentration systematically higher than forenoon at altitudes of about 75–90 km in summer-time Central Europe.
