AbstractWe report the results of measurements of the critical Marangoni number MaC for the transition to time dependent flow in small floating zones (radius = length = 3.0 mm). We varied the Prandtl-Number Pr systematically in the range 18 ≤ Pr ≤ 65 by experimenting with different paraffines at different mean temperatures. A nonlinear dependence MaC (Pr) is predicted by linear stability analysis for this Pr-Number range and evidence for this was found.
