Abstract Wave observations from the AMPTE UKS satellite are analysed. Wave data are presented for magnetopause crossings and other dayside regions and phenomena in order to address the problem of the role of plasma waves in processes such as reconnection. Wave measurements for all known UKS flux transfer events (FTE's) have been analysed to show morphological trends. The observed wave power is never sufficient to account for the dissipation. Indications that the wave power may occur at other frequencies, or in very short bursts are discussed. Alternatively the waves may be localized in spatial regions.
