Abstract The grain-plasma coupling parameter (Γ) is examined for a dusty plasma. The possibility of the formation of an ordered structure (such as a Coulomb lattice) within a dusty plasma is considered. (It has been suggested that the Uranian rings may contain such ordered structures.) The results of a computer code developed to model grain lattice charging within a dusty plasma by means of a modified particle-particle method are discussed. This approach provides a method for studying the charging of the grain lattice immersed in a plasma while still including the collective effects caused by the interaction of the lattice with the plasma and the interparticle effects (both of the grains within the lattice and the particles which comprise the plasma). The interaction of the charged grain lattice with the grain-plasma coupling is examined.
