Abstract A small cryogenically cooled telescope named IRTS (Infrared Telescope in Space) is under development. It has been designed specifically for observations of diffuse emission in IR and sub mm regions such as cosmic background radiation or Galactic infrared radiation. IRTS will be flown onboard a Japanese reusable free flyer called SFU (Space Flyer Unit) in 1994.
