Abstract The PMR ch. 3000 radiance data are correlated with temperatures from a reference atmosphere at 85 and 90 km to obtain mean temperature fields at these heights. Another technique for this purpose is to extrapolate upwards temperature fields given by the Barnett-Corney model for the stratosphere and mesosphere. The results of the two techniques agree well. The temperature fields in the lower thermosphere are briefly analysed.
