This series of Wright air-cooled engines incorporates several distinctive features. In order to obtain a robust crankcase, capable of withstanding the heavy stresses imposed on high-performance engines, the use has been made of steel instead of an aluminium alloy. It is claimed that more than compensation for the increased weight is gained in the strength and resistance to fatigue of this material.
