ON the occasion of the Society of British Aircraft Constructors' Twenty-Second Flying Display and Exhibition, we eschew our traditional editorial policy and publish an issue specially devoted to recent progress made by the British aircraft industry. The journal, this month, contains articles covering the fields of structural design, engine design, space activities and machine tool developments. These specialist papers are contributed by engineers who are intimately concerned with the strengths and weaknesses of their own particular sector of the industry, and it is reassuring to note that the tone of each is rich with optimism.
