IT is well known that the problem of finding the stresses in cylinders under torque is amenable to analytical solution in only a few simple cases. For cylinders that are not included in the latter category various approximate methods are available, and of these one of the most convenient as well as the most powerful is that due to A. Thorn and J. Orr. As the method is apparently little used in practice, it was thought that a simple exposition of the principles of the method with numerical examples for illustration would be of value to designers. It is hoped that the examples given are sufficient in themselves to show a practical stress man clearly how to proceed.
