A tyre for a heavy civil engineering vehicle allowing the visual detection, in a dark environment, of the stressed areas of the side faces, each end face of the tyre tread (4) being extended radially inwards via an outer face of the sidewall (5), an end face of the tread (4) and the outer face of the sidewall (5) extending it radially inwards forming a side face of the tyre (6). This method comprises a first step of applying a retroreflective coating material (7) onto at least a portion of at least one side face of the tyre (6), allowing the visual detection, in a dark environment, of the portion of at least one side face of the tyre (6), a second step of using the tyre (1) in a mechanically stressful environment, a third step of identifying, in a dark environment, stressed areas (8) of the portion of at least one side face of the tyre (6) that was initially coated with the retroreflective coating material (7) and is lacking said retroreflective coating material (7) due to the mechanical stresses experienced by the tyre (1) during use.
