The present invention provides a coupling actuated landing gear system for an articulated vehicle comprised of at least two separable vehicle sections, the system including: a first vehicle section having a first coupling portion and a second vehicle section having a second coupling portion, the first and second vehicle sections being releasably coupleable to one another via the first and second coupling portions; coupling sensor means disposed on the second vehicle section, for determining whether the first and second coupling portions are correctly engaged or disengaged with one another; landing gear means disposed on the second vehicle section, the landing gear means including drive means for extending or retracting at least one landing gear leg of the landing gear means upon command; and, control means disposed on the second vehicle section, for actuating the drive means of the landing gear means, for extending or retracting the at least one landing gear leg, dependent on the state of the first and second coupling portions as determined by the coupling sensor means; wherein the control means is configured to only actuate the drive means to retract the at least one landing leg upon the coupling sensor means determining that the first and second coupling portions are correctly engaged.
