The disclosed techniques capture electronic images of a portion (16) of the taxiway (20) using cameras or other electronic imaging devices (14) mounted on the aircraft (10), pre-process the electronic images to generate regularized image data, apply a trained multichannel neural network model (block 402) to the regularized image data to generate a preliminary estimate of cross-track error (304) relative to the centerline (22) of the taxiway (20), and post-process the preliminary estimate to generate an estimate of cross-track error (304) of the aircraft (10).
