A method of monitoring the environment of a subsea structure 10, the method comprising: monitoring at least one optical transmission zone 20 extending into water from the structure; detecting incursion of a light source 18 into the at least one transmission zone; and responding to the detection by: alerting a remote master control 26 via a control system that controls the structure; and/or, if the light source is an underwater vehicle 22, effecting optical data communication between the structure and the vehicle via a wireless communication link 24 across the at least one transmission zone. The method may also include passive monitoring the zone and may also provide a live video feed from the structure or vehicle. A system for monitoring the environment of a subsea structure is also claimed.
