A composite tubular structure (200) is described suitable for transmitting axial loads in compression or tension. It comprises an elongate composite member (70) having an inwardly tapered section (72) at each end, and an embedded nut (50) retained in each inwardly tapered section for forming a connection with another component or end fitting (80). The inwardly tapered section has an inner surface (78) that follows a tapered outer surface (58) of one of the embedded nuts. Each inwardly tapered section narrows the composite member in a longitudinal direction towards one end so as to provide a constriction which retains the respective embedded nut within. At least one of the embedded nuts comprises a multipart nut, comprising: an internal nut (53) having a radially inner engagement surface (52) for engaging with a rod (80) and a radially outer first sliding surface (si); and an internal support member (51) having a radially outer surface (58) comprising the tapered outer surface of the embedded nut, and a radially inner second sliding surface (s2) for contacting and sliding on the radially outer first sliding surface of the internal nut. A connector or end fitting (80, 84, 86) may clamp the inwardly tapered section with a pre-load. A liner (60) may be used to support the nuts during deposition of the filaments of the composite member in order to form the two inwardly tapered sections at the ends of the composite member.
